Green Energy Companies Take a Shine to Ontario

by Chris Hatch

If anyone should get credit for the stampede of new green investment into Ontario, it’s the United Steelworkers, farmers, First Nations, enviros, unions and others that made up the Green Energy Act Alliance. The Alliance successfully rallied for feed-in-tariffs and a Green Energy Act to fire up independent power producers and lay a foundation for clean-tech manufacturing. And the indomitable Tyler Hamilton reports that it is working already.

It’s the early response the McGuinty government was hoping to get when it tabled its Green Energy Act last month and, more recently, announced a new renewable-power purchase program that offers a generous premium for green power – electrons that flow from solar panels, wind turbines, hydro facilities and biomass systems.

The Act, championed by McGuinty and Smitherman is attracting new investment, independent power producers and clean-tech manufacturing firms only weeks after being introduced.

Has Ontario surpassed BC, Quebec and Manitoba? Time for everyone else to ramp up.

I would give a shout out to Environmental Defence too. They were very helpful in organizing against the NIMBYs. And if the wind power opponents had gained steam (!) the McGuinty government woulnd’t have the cahones to do the Green Energy Act.
