The Most Depressing and Dangerous Part of Obama’s Speech

by Chris Hatch

The most depressing part of Obama’s speech last night wasn’t the olive branch offered to offshore drilling and other sops. It was the fact that not only Canadian policy but the whole world is hostage to the US Senate. And this is where they’re at (h/t Romm):

For want of a Senate vote, the U.S. was lost. And for want of the U.S., a global deal. And for want of a….

OK, it’s a bit clunky but you get the idea. Science is not carrying the day in the indispensable nation.

Small consolation perhaps but as Dyer points out this is mainly an Anglosphere problem.

I wish Canada was actually hostage to USA on climate emissions and policies!

If so our emissions would be far lower than they are now.

Harper and Prentice love to say that Canada must “harmonize” climate policy and actions with USA. But we are doing the very opposite and have been for years.

For all the stalling around USA national cap & trade law, the fact remains that USA emissions peaked and are declining. And per-capita the Americans are already 7% below 1990 levels.

Canada has not “harmonized” current actions or current emissions with USA. Our emissions are still rising and are 10% higher than USA. Even per-capita our emissions are up 7% since 1990.

Please Harper, make good on your promise and “harmonize” our climate emissions with USA!
